Korean Scholar Sanggyu Jung Wins Award for Study on Christian Independence Activists

Study analyzes 564 Christian independence activists under Japanese colonial rule
New concept of “Testimonial Patriotic Sacrifice” explores intersection of martyrdom and sacrifice for national independence

TSN KOREA(티에스엔코리아) |  Korean independence movement historian Dr. Sanggyu Jung has received an honorable mention in the inaugural Korean Christian Martyrs Memorial Hall Research Paper Competition for a study examining the relationship between Christian faith and Korea’s independence movement during Japanese colonial rule.

His paper, “Between Patriotic Sacrifice and Martyrdom: Types of Christian Independence Movements under Japanese Colonial Rule and the Category of ‘Testimonial Patriotic Sacrifice,’” focuses on Christians who resisted colonial authorities while explicitly grounding their actions in religious faith.

At the center of the research is a new analytical category Jung calls “Testimonial Patriotic Sacrifice.” It addresses cases in which sacrifice for national independence and Christian martyrdom overlap rather than exist as mutually exclusive categories.

Jung proposes three criteria: testimony, persecution and acceptance. The individual must have explicitly identified faith as a motivation for the action, faced punishment or violence from state authorities because of that action, and continued nonviolent resistance despite knowing the potential consequences.

The study is also distinguished by its data-driven methodology. Jung cross-referenced church records, court documents, prison records, surveillance files and the Korean government’s list of 18,776 recognized independence patriots to construct a database of 564 Christian independence activists.

According to the study, 67.38 percent of those identified were associated with the March First Independence Movement, while 66.22 percent were church officers or affiliated with Christian institutions such as mission schools and hospitals.

The findings suggest that nationwide Christian networks played an important organizational role in Korea’s anti-colonial movement while also raising questions about how religious resistance has been remembered within Korean churches.

Sanggyu Jung studied mathematics at the University of Oregon and public policy at Seoul National University before studying at Harvard Kennedy School. He later earned a doctorate with research on Korean traditional medical practitioners involved in the independence movement between 1905 and 1945.

He currently conducts research through the Institute for Patriots and Veterans Culture, focusing on identifying overlooked independence activists and promoting historical and veterans-related education.

The award ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 31 at the second academic seminar of the Korean Christian Martyrs Memorial Hall in Seoul.
